TATTOO AFTERCARE

Firstly, congratulations on your new tattoo! We know that getting a tattoo is an exciting experience, but it's important to remember that the care you provide after your tattoo is just as important as the design you choose.

Aftercare is the process of taking care of your tattoo once you’re out of the shop. Proper aftercare can help to prevent infection, reduce the risk of scarring, and keep your tattoo looking its best for years to come. Without proper care, your tattoo can become damaged, fade or even become infected, which can lead to a variety of complications.

essential steps to follow:

  • Keep the bandage or on for at least 2-3 hours after getting your tattoo. If the bandage becomes stuck to your skin, do not peel it off – instead, run lukewarm water over it until it comes off easily.

  • Gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free antibacterial soap. Use clean hands to gently remove any blood, ink, or plasma from the area.

  • Pat your tattoo dry with a clean towel. Let it completely dry (10 mins).

  • Apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor, A&D, or your preferred tattoo aftercare ointment. If you’d like to purchase a tattoo-specific ointment, we have a list of our personal favorites on our home page. Do not use too much ointment or the tattoo will not heal properly. You do not need to re-wrap your tattoo, but may do so for the first night if you’re concerned about contamination while sleeping. Continue to use ointment for the next 3 days.

  • After 3 days, switch from ointment to a non-scented, gentle lotion. Continue to lotion your tattoo regularly for the next week or until it’s no longer scabbing or flaking.

  • Try your best to keep your new tattoo protected during its healing process by avoiding the urge to touch/scratch it and keeping it clear from dirty hands, surfaces, clothing, or other items that may possibly be dirty.

DO NOT:

  • Do not go swimming or submerge your tattoo in water for up to 4 weeks after getting your tattoo.

  • Do not allow your tattoo to be in the sun for the first 4 weeks.

  • Do not suffocate your tattoo with snug-fit clothing.

  • Do not apply alcohol or peroxide to your tattoo.

  • Try to avoid activities that may cause excessive sweating around your tattooed area.

  • Do not pick or scratch your tattoo.

  • Do not cover your tattoo after applying ointment, too much moisture could cause uneven healing.
